Creating Spaces for Children and Young People to Thrive
The B&Q Foundation will fund Action for Children with £150,000 over three years to create safe and happy homes for children and young people in the UK.
Our support is based on the principle that every child should have a safe and supportive environment enabling them to succeed. Through this collaboration, the Foundation is funding two main projects:
- Furnishing new residential homes for children in care
- Providing transition packs for care-experienced young people moving into independent living
“We’re delighted to be working together with Action for Children. This partnership is a brilliant example of how we can create spaces that help children and young people feel safe, supported, and ready to thrive.” Jeannie Pitt, B&Q Foundation Manager
Spotlight: Yew Tree House
One of the standout projects funded through this partnership is the furnishing of Yew Tree House, a fully accessible home for children with learning and physical disabilities. Located in Chesterfield, every part of Yew Tree House has been designed to be a home – a place that supports not just the children’s needs, but also their strengths, their interests, their personality, and their independence.
The Happy Homes Project
The broader Happy Homes initiative focuses on practical, emotional, and psychological support for young people at critical transition points. Transition packs include essential household items like bedding, kitchenware, and lighting—transforming empty flats into welcoming homes. As one young person shared:
“It has meant I can furnish my flat with all the essentials rather than having to choose. This has reduced the stress and anxiety I feel about finances and means my flat can be a space I want to be in and feel safe in.”
