Giving Young People Somewhere to Call Home
When Roundabout applied for grants to refurbish accommodation for homeless people, we knew immediately they’d come to the right place.
Their commitment to ending homelessness in South Yorkshire is demonstrated by their support of more than 300 young people aged between 16-25 – every day – in accommodation either provided or maintained by the charity.
“The B&Q Foundation believes that everyone deserves a safe place to live and so our missions feel very closely aligned,” says Jeannie Pitt, B&Q Foundation Manager. “The projects we have funded for Roundabout are as diverse as they are innovative and all achieve the same thing – giving homes to young people when they really need them.”
Starter Spaces
A £5000 grant has been used to transform a neglected property into self contained but supported accommodation for young people leaving the care system. It gives them a safe and welcoming space as they prepare to move on and live independently. 14 young people each year call the property home as they learn to look after themselves and where they live.
Outdoor Places
A further grant of £5000 created outdoor shelters at one of their residential sites. This was not only vital during Covid as a safe place for keyworker sessions, but also valuable to the residents long term as being outside more has proven mental health benefits. An outdoor place to meet, chill, have a bit of quiet study time or play pool has amazing and far-reaching advantages for everyone.
Building Projects
A further £5000 was donated to the Future Builders Project which sees young people helping to refurbish a property that they can then live in for a period of time at a reduced rent. Learning construction skills along the way which set them up for an apprenticeship in the future. The B&Q Foundation grant focused on environmental initiatives, such as adding insulation and smart meters to the property which also helps the young people with future budgeting.
Nat Loftus, Roundabout fundraiser said “Giving young people a place to call home whilst they learn the practical skills, or gain the confidence needed to live independently is a vital stepping stone. We’re so grateful to the B&Q Foundation for its ongoing support.”
